ISEF 2015 Recap Two weeks ago I flew to Pittsburgh, PA, to attend the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, or ISEF. If youre unfamiliar with ISEF, here is a description from the Society for Science and the Public: The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), a program of Society for Science the Public (SSP), is the worlds largest international pre-college science competition. Approximately 1,700 high school students from more than 75 countries, regions and territories showcase their independent research as they compete for approximately $4 million in prizes. The Intel ISEF is the premier global science competition for students in grades 9â€"12. On Wednesday, May 13th, I arrived in Pittsburgh and, as is tradition, invited enrolling MIT 2019s who were at ISEF to a little reception. While some people had to stay with their teams, a few of us met up at the Carnegie Science Center, saw Songela 19 (who works at CSC) light some things on fire, and also to watch some robots serve us froyo. Some I knew from being prospective students, including one student who had been admitted to RSI for this coming summer, where he hopes to continue the math research that earned him a 3rd Award at ISEF this year. The vast majority I didnt know, and, because of the number of people (and scarcity of time), I didnt have the chance to meet. But reading about and listening to the award-winning research so many of them did as high-school students was pretty mindboggling in the most wonderful of ways. I didnt know anything about ISEF before I began working at MIT Admissions. We didnt have science fairs at my K-12 school system, and nobody in my family or social network growing up was a researcher. If they had, I think I might have done it, and I suspect I would have liked it. The potential benefits of this solution could be huge; being able to cure the crushing effects of depression by sleeping seems like a simple and easy thing to do, yet how simple is it? With all of the work students are assigned, this takes us back to the issue of too much pressure on teens. However, if we were able to conquer that, and teachers st arted assigning less work, imagine what a liberating and positive effect it would have on teens! This could change many teens’ current situations, and lead to them living happier, less stressful, more fulfilling lives. A third way to help prevent and/ or cure depression is to exercise more. Everyone knows that exercise is god for you, but can it really help cure depression? In fact, it can, according to web. md. com. They say that, â€Å"When you exercise, your body releases chemicals called endorphins. These chemicals interact with the receptors in your brain that reduce your perception of pain. Endorphins also trigger a positive feeling in the body, similar to that of morphine. Like sleep, exercise is one of your body’s natural antidepressants, and is much cheaper and easier to obtain than prescription antidepressants. Also, exercise is something many people enjoy, and can be fun depending on what you do. Imagine the benefits of doing something fun that you enjoy, plus the rewards of the endorphins being released into your body! Many people are probably skeptica l that something as simple as exercise can be as beneficial as something mixed up in a lab, specifically targeted to fix depression, but Gerard Sanacova, MD and PhD, disagrees. There are also all of the other wonderful benefits of exercise to consider, in addition to its anti-depressive qualities. It’s a win-win situation! As you can see, depression is a horrible, and serious problem among teens everywhere today, and it needs to be addressed. Three ways to solve this horrendous disease are to reduce the crushing pressure put on teens these days, raise people’s serotonin levels by getting a 7-9 hour-long night’s sleep, and raise endorphin levels by getting out and exercising. All of these solutions have been proven to help, but other options include CBT, antidepressants, and therapy. If you or a loved one are wrestling with the crippling effects of depression, seek help, and educate yourselves about what you can do to defeat this horrible ailment. The economy of the tribal has been primarily hunting-foraging and shifti ng cultivation.More than of the tribal, to a large extant depend on forests and forests resources for their livelihood. The major part of Amalgamate region is covered with Tiger Reserve (buffer zone) and the reserve forest. Data for this assignment was collected in both primary and secondary methods. Primary data was collected prior to the assignment during December 2012. Secondary data was collected mainly through use of the internet, from papers and articles published online, as well as from Journals that were accessed online. Primary data was collected during December 2012.The data collected is mainly in the forms of photographs of the settlement, including amenities provided in the newly established villages, and an unstructured interview of a few affected people which was photographed. The persons to be intervie wed were selected based on Judgment sampling, where we went beyond the main road of the village where the authorities took us to, and interviewed persons living in the homes in the nearby lanes. Due to unfamiliarity with the people's customs, we took along with us a local who showed us other homes.Four families were represented in the interview by members who were available, out of 200 families in the village. Figure 1: Photograph taken at study site Findings: Multiple issues were identified in the course of this assignment, including: * The displaced tribal and other weaker sections are getting normalized. * These people are not skilled they don't find any employment in urban set-up, and they are forced to occupations like rag picking, rickshaw pulling and even bonded labor. As the tribal are illiterate and innocent, they are exploited by the traders and non-tribal in most cases. Most often they take loans from traders and non-tribal and remain indebted. * Lack of general sanitatio n in the new settlement. * Increased mortality rate in the village (as reported by the affected people) – The toll of malaria in Amalgamate is very high. Due to this malaria impact the general vitality of people is very low and people also fall prey to pneumonia, bronchitis and other disease.All these clubbed together known as Amalgamate fever (Kandahar, 2004). * Lack of healthcare facilities, which were provided to them before relocation. * Lack of proximity to modern amenities. * Lack of proximity or access to NTP as well as medicinal plants. Low levels of awareness of financial planning has led to bad investments by people, leaving many people with no option but to be daily wage laborers. * Lack of proximity to schools. Malnutrition – shortage of food supplies and lack of medical facilities by the concerned departments. * The locals were charged for relocation costs, which very significantly high, given that they were relocated with their homes. Conclusion: There exists a significant gap between policy and requirement, and also between policy and implementation. Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&R) policies at he National and State Levels, though are expected to safeguard the interests of the displaced persons, they are not practiced in the right spirit.Rehabilitation apart from depriving them of their lands, livelihoods and resource-base, displacement ha s other traumatic psychological and socio-cultural consequences. It is a slow and continuous process, which requires an organized effort over a period of time. There should be more emphasis on improved communication, it results in a more effective grievance redressed process from the perspective of local people, which in turn ensures that robbers in the rehabilitation process are addressed before they become too serious.

Patrick Henry and Benjamin Franklin both knew that success sometimes requires persistence along with compromise. Compromise is defined by The Oxford Dictionary as an agreement or a settlement of a dispute that is reached by each side making concessions. By using this definition and analyzing these speeches, it is obvious to readers that both politicians were willing to make compromises. There are however many differences as to the extent and what type of concessions these gentlemen were willing to make.The Second Virginia Convention met March 20, 1775 inland at Richmond–in what is now called St. John's Church. This is where Delegate Patrick Henry presented resolutions to raise a militia, and to furthermore put Virginia in a posture of defense. Henry Basically says in his speech that the colonists have tried to compromise already and it has had no effect.â€Å"Sir, we have done everything that could be done to avert the storm which is now coming on. We have petitioned; we have remonstrated; we have supplicated; we have prostrated ourselves before the throne, and have implored its interposition to arrest the tyrannical hands of the ministry and Parliament.†(Henry102) By reading this statement, Henry’s feelings are fairly obvious. While he believes that other routes should be taken first, the colonists now have no other choice. By analyzing this closer, it is apparent that Henry believes in compromise, but there is a very thin line on where it is time to push forward.â€Å"I have experienced many instances of being obliged, by better information or fuller consideration, to change my opinions even on important subjects, which I once thought right, but found to be otherwise.† (Franklin105) Benjamin Franklin’s opinion of opinions. What this statement shows, is a form of compromise. A change of opinion on an important subject because of the influence of another, is a form of compromise. One of the main things that has to be taken into consideration here, is the fact that these politicians are speaking at two different times in America’s history. If Franklin would have been speaking before the revolution occurred, he most likely would have been a lot more persistent and not wanting to compromise nearly as much. On the flip side, if Henry would have been speaking post-American revolution, he most likely would have been quite a bit more lax and not as prominent about the issue.Because of the change of opinions due to different circumstances, it is nearly impossible to compare these to politician’s views based upon these speeches. If they are analyzed closely enough, however, it is seen that they both view compromise as a necessity. The real question is, how far are they willing to take it?

Should The Amendment Granted Us Freedom Of Religion

The Amendment given to us by the U.S has granted us freedom of religion, but yet religion is not given an option to learn about in schools. Students in public schools should be given the option to learn religion as an elective. It should not be forced to be taken in school, but it should be a choice to take so the kids and young adults of today’s generation can be literate of religion and have a choice that will impact their lives heavily. Religion is by far the most controversial and non-debatable topic in the world. The topic of religion is hard to speak about and debate because it is solely based on faith. Faith is defined as having complete trust and confidence in someone or something. Everyone has faith in something whether it’s having faith that a loved one’s surgery will go well or faith that they will win a race at a track meet. Many have faith on some things, but not someone like Buddha or Jesus or maybe Muhammad. But why is that? The answer is because t he schools aren’t giving these kids any education when it pertains to beliefs and religion. As a result, young children and young adults do not know what they represent. Many atheists say that religion should not be discussed in schools at all because it offends their beliefs of not having any beliefs at all, but freedom of religion should express every type of belief briefly so kids have a true shot at picking a type of lifestyle to live.
